A photographic record of IDLES and JOHN performing at Hard Club in Porto, focused on the physicality of live performance, changing stage light and the close relationship between performers and audience.
From stage to audience
The photographs begin with the performance on stage before moving increasingly into the relationship between performers and the room around them.
Across both sets, gestures, movement, changing light and the audience become part of the compositions. By the later photographs, the separation between stage and crowd has largely disappeared, with performers and audience sharing the same physical space.
Approach
Live performance leaves little opportunity to repeat a moment. Light, movement and expression change continuously, and the photographs depend on responding quickly while remaining attentive to what is happening beyond the performer alone.
The series moves between wider frames, close observations and moments of audience interaction, retaining microphones, instruments, hands, phones and other elements of the room rather than isolating the musicians from their surroundings.
The project is included here as an example of PortoPhoto’s approach to events and culture: working responsively in changing conditions while preserving the people, atmosphere and interactions that give an event its character.
SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHS
The sequence begins with JOHN, then moves into IDLES, gradually shifting from the stage toward the audience. Wider performance photographs give way to increasingly close, physical interactions, ending with performers and the crowd sharing the same frame and space.
